THE ASSOCIATION OF HOTELS, BUSINESS AND LEISURE (H.B.L) Herne Bay

Location of Project Activity - Herne Bay, South East Kent (UK)
Project Rationale
Herne Bay was built around the pier, was and is still known as the town centre. Such a development will bring back harmony - encourage use of passenger boats, all sea sports, educational and cultural activities; will enhance and attract use of the Thames Corridor and communication with Essex. Continentals already have a taste for Herne Bay and return regularly especially via the tunnel, boat travel would be an added opportunity for seafarers from France. Our coast-line will be extended by one and half miles. The Pier will be a unique and healthy contrasting attraction to the Cathedral City - for UK, Continental holiday makers and visitors.

Project Outline

Restoration of Pierhead, rebuild of middle section - to the inner end of the Pier and the Sports centre it supports. Were the project to proceed to construction, the work required to bring the pier back to a working condition and to a pleasing appearance can be divided into four main sections:
Survey and Investigation, Refurbishment and Alterations to Existing Structure, New Pier Structure, Super Structures.
Intended outcomes
The rebuilding of the Pier will be a major contribution to the development of the Maritime Heritage Trail ( Interrec II). It will be a major attraction, from the moment building begins. Complimenting the rebuilt Band Stand (ERDF) and recently landscaped sea front (ERDF/MAF). The Project will renew community spirit locally, thus encompassing Continental visitors; will bring about less vandalism, and healthy promenading out to sea (three quarters mile) not to mention easy access 'over the sea' for the disabled!. Commercial enterprise will increase. The opportunity for leisure uses will enhance business in all areas, at the same time creating a full scope of activities inviting various Clubs, School, Sport teams; offering safe mooring between London/Ramsgate for seagoing vessels. Providing, once again a springboard for economic revival with an opportunity to work with companies such as Southern Water, in an educational capacity.
